There seems to be a lot of noise on the trace even when no probe is connected.  It is only a few mv, but they should be flat lines.  The same sort of jitter or noise shows up when the probe is connected to the square wave generator output on the front panel that is used to adjust the probe compensation.

Is this normal?  What are other people seeing

Sir, that is normal.
Oscilloscope itself has bottom noise.
You can use average acquisition mode to reduce the noise.
